COLLISION Interview (Netherland)

Answer Wouter

Collision is an aggressive grindcore band with thrash metal and hardcore ingredients. What you  get is a violent straight-in-your-face wall of sound that swings. Combined with two singers, to  give it something extra, especially live. Very influenced by the old school bands but not acting  like a retro band. The band was founded by singers Björn and Tammi in 2000. After getting the right line-up  together, the band started playing blasting live shows, full of energy and aggression. After many live shows and one demo ('Miserable, Squashed, Dead') Collision recorded their first  full length album called “Romantic Display Of Love”, which was released in 2003 on Bizarre  Leprous Production. In 2005 Bass player Marcel was replaced by ex-Mangled bass player Boris. At the end of 2005 Collision recorded a new album called 'Roadkiller'. The album is released in  June 2006 by Bones Brigade Records and contains 14 songs of grinding thrashcore assault! With 'Roadkiller' in their pocket Collision did lots of shows and mini tours. In the mean time  Collision didn't stop writing new songs. In 2008 Collision teamed up with DrDoom for a split  CD/LP on Scrotum Jus Records and Everydayhate Records. To celebrate their 10 year existence Collision released at the end of 2010 a limited album called  'Decade Of Disgust' with all the out of print and live material we recorded between 2003-2009! In june 2012 Collision will release their third full-length album called 'A Healthy Dose Of Death' on  Hammerheart Records. Collision has done some great gigs with bands like: Gojira, Pungent Stench, Saxon, The Rotted, Lock Up, Agathocles, Inhume, After Forever, Dropdead, Behemoth, Immortal, Municipal Waste,  Aborted, Sinister and more. Collision also played on festivals like Obscene Extreme (Czech  Republic), Motocultor Festival (France), Fit Of Rage (Czech Republic), Weistock (Holland), Rockweekend (Holland) and more!

Hi there Wouter, thanks for showing interest in answering this interview. How are you? Anything important to start with?
Hello Herry, thank you for the interest in Collision! At the moment we are preparing and promoting our album release party at the end of this month.

Collision is an aggressive grindcore band with thrash metal and hardcore ingredients. What you get is a violent straight-in-your-face wall of sound that swings. Combined with two singers, to give it something extra, especially live. Is has become an absolute decision for the band to create something CHAOTIC? then what if a single vocalist right?
I don’t think the word chaotic is right, we try to keep our song structures simple and in your face, but they also must be very agressive and fast!

I wonder how's the interest from the underground Metal media so far? How did the reviews turn out? How many interviews have you answered and how's the response for "A Healthy Dose of Death" from the media and the fans up to now? Are you satisfied?
Yes, the promotion is doing fine! Hammerheart Records just works with new guy who did an excellent job promotion our band. We got nice reviews and a lot of interviews. Most of the reviews are good… so I am very satisfied ofcourse!

For COLLISION, what distinguishes this release with the material you before? what if this is for you a blast form the mature concept from CD " Roadkiller " or " Romantic Display of Love " ?
I think this release is more in your face, we worked very hard on the song structures, something we didn’t worked on in the past. I really like the new songs and they are very cool to play live. But ofcouse we all got our personal favourites from the past that we play live.

I'm Very SURPRISE with band Sound Production for this album, what Is this already a Trademark for COLLISION established itself from the beginning? and how COLLISION still able to maintain all of this until now?
We always record our albums by Erwin Hermsen from the Toneshed Studio, who does a great job to capture our live sound! Erwin is also very nice to work with and the studio is in our hometown, so why look further.

Tell me how the COLLISION could meet with Hammerheart Records? whether previously this has become one of the biggest wish you could join in it? whether the label is doing a great promotion for the Bands Roster Inside? I also know this label has a great band. then how to Sub Label Karmageddon Media and Unveiling The Wicked?
The sublabels are not anymore, it’s just Hammerheart Records at the moment. They do a great promotion for us, so I am more than satisfied. Also it’s good for the communication because their office is in the same country and some of our friends work over there.

And How with Nuclear Vault Records ?
They simply mailed me if they could release our album on vinyl, a dream come true! We didn’t got the LP’s yet, they will be released at the end of this month, but I’m sure they will be good.

Your music sounds really matured, well-structured and GRINDING as fuck. Did you and the other band members play in other bands before and how do you see your band considering the musical skills?
I don’t think we are better or more skilled then other grindcore/thrash metal bands. All the members played in different bands before (metalcore, death metal, hardcore and even classic rock). Some of the members have also other bands, Luc is still playing in his rock tribute band, Boris plays in a sludge band called ‘Acid Deathtrip’ (check them out!!) and I play in metal band The Guilt Parade.

Talking about GRINDCORE releases. Tell me some of your current fave-releases and some of your all-time classics. Please explain what makes the releases special to you.
The new Phobia is an awesome new record! I also enjoy listening to new bands like Dead In The Dirt! All-time classics are ofcourse Terrorizer, Nasum, Disrupt, Napalm Death, Extreme Noise Terror and Repulsion. These bands got me into grindcore and extreme music.

And how to prepare celebrate the release new album 'A Healthy Dose Of Death " For old times sake we will play at Walhalla in Sevenum and we are supported by Band friends and cool bands like Remorse, Rectal Smegma and Villainy on 29 September 2012? Is the COLLISION prepared using a special preparation for everything to go with the fantastic or terrible for the entire audience who came there later?
Actually we just ask a lot of friends to play, have a DJ who will play the best metal songs at the afterparty and we hope we can give our hometown audience a special Collision show!

To Cover Song, collision becomes more wild when the band brought back Phenomenal Grindcore Band Track? Napalm Death, Terrorizer, Disrupt or Nasum ?
We like to play covers, at the moment we only do cover songs for compilation and tribute albums. With the recordings from ‘A Healthy Dose Of Death’ we also recorded a Disrupt cover for a compilation album and a split EP. More news about that later…

Tell us your memorable experience while playing in Paris and at the Motocultor Festival! and the rest of the people meet and partied with! What French State is a great place for Traveling & journey Tour Music Date?
We played in France a lot, mostly in Paris. But it was summertime so it was very difficult to promote the show we did in Paris. But there were still 40 people who showed up, so who am I to complain! The show at Motocultor Festival was great! Good and professional crew, good audience (we had to play early, still a lot of people showed up!) and we had a great afterparty with our drinking buddies in Inhume!

Did you know about the Underground Scene in my country, Indonesia? whether Indonesia will someday be your wish list Main COLLISION to be here one day? Because many Big Band bands ever to play here. and then there is also you have contacts with Individu/Labels/Production or other in Indonesia Scene?
Actually I don’t know that much bands from Indonesia… but ofcourse I wish we could go there in the future to play our music and party with you guys!

Wouter, it's time to come to an end now. Hope you enjoyed this interview? Thanks for answering my questions and the time you spend on them. I hope I didn't forget anything? If there's something left to say at the end feel free to use this opportunity now. The last words are yours!
Thank you for the interview! Hope you liked the record and maybe we meet sometimes! Cheers!!
